The house is elongated on the east-west axis and had 2 bedrooms, it was originally designed by Architect Diane Gillis of Chapel Hill (1997). The owners wanted to add 2 bedrooms and a bathroom, as well as a playroom and a new secondary access from the garage. A screen porch on the South side of the living room would also extend the social spaces (off the living room) whenever the weather allows it. It was critical to respect the architectural style and find a solution that would provide the additional needed space without compromising aesthetics and a unified design.

We came up with a solution that added a small courtyard in the North side of the house, allowing windows on the hallway connecting the addition to the existing house as well as additional south facing windows in the playroom. The transition room from the existing house became a study for the kid(s) with built-in bookshelves and desks. We reused a nice shoji screen in the playroom, and added a hallway on the eastern side facing the existing courtyard with lots of windows and walls to hang art. Two solar panels were added to the south roof of the playroom, and a new mechanical system for the addition.
